Rock Hill, South Carolina (GLOBE NEWSWIRE), April 27, 2021 - 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD) today announced the launch of VSP® Hybrid Guides, the latest enhancement to its VSP surgical planning solution portfolio. This first marketed solution for maxillofacial surgeons combines the strength of titanium with the relative flexibility of nylon in a patient-specific guide plate, which is registered to the dentition to increase the visibility of the guide plate placement and surgical site confidence. This latest innovation is designed based on customer feedback and reflects 3D Systems' commitment to bring better results for maxillofacial and reconstructive surgeons and their patients.

VSP Hybrid Guides makes full use of the advantages of each material. The use of nylon material enables tooth-based registration and retains the contour advantages of rigid metal cutting and drilling guides. The new guide is equipped with easy-to-use connection points designed to confirm correct connection. Depending on the surgeon’s preferences, patient-specific instruments can be designed to allow multiple cutting/drilling positions on a single bite-based guide.

The second benefit of using occlusal registration is to reduce the guiding footprint. Thinner contour guides not only make it easier to place in limited exposed areas, but they also increase the surgeon’s visibility of the surgical site.

"3D Systems and its VSP surgical plan and guidelines are an integral part of my ability to provide highly successful results for patients undergoing orthopedic jaw surgery," said Dr. Jay Neugarten of the Center for Orthognathic and Maxillofacial Surgery in New York. "The new VSP Hybrid Guide is the next generation of occlusal-based surgical guides. The ability to combine two materials-nylon and titanium-to create a cutting and predictive drilling surgical guide aligned with the dentition, providing precision and accuracy for my patients Surgical results. Using VSP Hybrid Guides with Stryker’s Facial iD custom board can simplify my surgical workflow. Compared with paper maps, it’s like using a satellite navigation system. This seamlessly integrates my digital treatment plan The ability to transfer to the surgical field allows me to provide the highest level of care to my patients."

The innovative surgical guide developed as part of this new solution is manufactured on DMP Flex 350 and ProX® SLS 6100 production-level 3D printer systems using 3D Systems LaserForm Ti and DuraForm® ProX PA materials. As part of the VSP system, creating patient-specific surgical guides has been proven to save surgeons and patients time in the operating room. 1

Menno Ellis, Executive Vice President of 3D Systems Healthcare Solutions said: “3D Systems is proud of our customer-centric innovation and our ability to provide patient-specific solutions that change the way healthcare is provided.” With the launch of VSP Hybrid Guides , We have enhanced the capabilities of our well-known VSP surgical solution portfolio to facilitate cranio-maxillofacial surgery. In cooperation with our professional biomedical engineers, surgeons can formulate effective surgical plans and patient-specific equipment to help improve patient outcomes. "

As a pioneer in the field of personalized medicine, 3D Systems' VSP technology has obtained FDA market approval as a service-based personalized surgery method, combining expertise in medical imaging, surgical simulation and 3D printing. Surgeons initiate the process, bringing their clinical knowledge and required surgical planning to an online web meeting with 3D Systems biomedical engineers to simulate and plan surgical procedures. The result is a digital plan that is transferred to the operating room through accurate 3D printed patient-specific models, guides and templates. 3D Systems has provided VSP solutions or anatomy services for more than 140,000 unique patient cases.

VSP Hybrid Guides is the latest result of a shared vision and partnership between 3D Systems and Stryker, aiming to provide innovative solutions for maxillofacial surgeons. The new hybrid guide is compatible with Facial iD®, which is Stryker's market-leading portfolio of patient-specific electroplating solutions. Combined surgical planning, improved patient-specific guides, and patient-specific implant systems provide maxillofacial surgeons with a complete end-to-end solution to simplify the patient-specific treatment experience. This product is currently in a limited release stage and is expected to be fully available in May 2021. Surgeons can request more information through Stryker's craniofacial representative.
