Last year, CMS removed 298 musculoskeletal-related services from the inpatient-only list and detailed plans to phase out all 1,700 surgeries from the inpatient-only list by 2024.

But on July 19, according to the rules proposed by the hospital outpatient payment system and the ASC payment system in 2022, the agency proposed to withdraw this measure and stop canceling the list of inpatients only on the grounds of patient safety.

The 298 procedures include 16 related anesthesia codes and 16 codes recommended by the hospital outpatient payment team.

The proposed rule will also delete 258 of the 266 programs that were added to the list of ASC covered programs in January.

The following are 298 programs and their codes, which may be returned to the inpatient-only list next year:
