In a “nail biting” incident” reported from Nashik, an 8-month-old baby swallowed a rather large 5 cm nail cutter, and was rescued by a team of doctors who performed a successful surgery. The incident was reported from Adgaon village in Nashik, and the team of doctors performed the miracle operation at the Dr Vasant Pawar Medical Collage.

Dr Shashikant Pol, assistant professor in the college, gave media an account of the incident and shared its rarity. In an interview with TOI, Dr Pol mentioned how doctors keep getting patients who swallow objects such as pen caps and even coins. However, he added that this was the first time the team of doctors at the hospital found themselves operating on a baby who had swallowed a nail-cutter.

According to Dr Pol, the infant was brought to the hospital by her parents sometime around 6.30 pm, earlier on September 19, barely two hours after the parents realized that the baby had swallowed a nail cutter.

An X-Ray showed the nail cutter stuck about 15-cm inside the throat. A decision was immediately taken and the baby underwent a surgery. Things got even more complicated when the doctors were unsuccessful at getting a good grip. However, eventually the nail-cutter was removed and the child was sent home.

For any new-parent, the idea of their child swallowing anything sharp and hazardous can keep them up in the night. Due to their delicate internal organs, children, especially babies, are vulnerable to such incidents which can cause a lot of health-related problems. Thankfully, doctors now are fully equipped to handle such situations.

In one such incident, a team of doctors in Nashik rescued an 8-month-old baby who mistakenly swallowed a rather sizeable nail-cutter.

The incident, which was first reported in TOI, occurred in Nashik’s Adgaon village. Parents of the 8-month-old baby were alarmed to find their baby incessantly crying, and within moments figured out the cause. They realized that their infant had swallowed a nail-cutter.

They first took to the Civil Hospital, a central hospital in the district run by the government. However, the doctors at the said hospital referred the baby and its parents to the Dr Vasantrao Pawar Medical College.

Sometime around 6.30 pm on September 19, the couple took their baby to the above-mentioned hospital. At the hospital, the baby’s X-Ray was taken. The test showed that the object was stuck 15 cm deep inside the baby’s throat.

The case was as complicated as they could come. The doctors were presented with the challenge to remove the object without severe invasion, and manage to save the child from any internal injury. The nail-cutter was stuck deep inside the respiratory tract of the baby, making the case all the more complicated.

Dr Shashikant Anil Pol, the Associate Professor at the ENT department, was quoted in a TOI report saying, “A decision to conduct an operation was taken immediately. A team of junior and senior resident doctors along with an anesthetist got together and successfully managed to remove the nail-cutter.”

While the doctor may be able to make the entire ordeal effortless and breezy, it was not without its complications. During the surgery, the doctors found it difficult to retrieve the nail-cutter as they were not able to have a firm grip on the object. The nail-cutter slid further, and before things could get any worse, the team of doctors got it out of the child’s system.

“Dr Pol says. The boy had not stopped crying ever since the accidental ingestion took place.
