Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley surgeon Dr. David Eggert gives a talk about robotic-assisted surgery to the Ripon Rotary Club.

Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley (OSI) surgeon Dr. David Eggert has deep ties to Ripon, having attended Ripon College and playing basketball under renowned coach Kermit “Doc” Weiske.

Those Ripon connections were on full display last month, when Eggert gave a presentation to the Ripon Rotary Club about the Mako robot and robotic-assisted joint surgery.

Eggert talked about his time living in Ripon, including the fact that he once was treated by chiropractor and 70-year Rotarian Roy Yeomans. He also discussed the precision of the Mako robot and its ability to perform complex joint replacements amid a host of obstacles.

He did so by walking Rotarians through some of the more challenging procedures he’s completed using the Mako robot.

One patient came to Eggert after slipping and falling during a shopping trip in West Allis, Wis.

Two years after her initial doctors put a plate and 40 screws in her hip, Eggert was able to use the Mako robot to perform a hip replacement without a hitch.

“This was a total hip replacement that did not touch a screw,” Eggert said. “It was pretty amazing.”

He showed scans from another patient, who suffered a deformity where there was bone touching bone in one of their hips and wide space on the other side between bones.

With the Mako robot, Eggert was able to correct the deformities and enhance the patient’s quality of life.

“We always have the same result,” he said of robotic-assisted surgery. “It’s all about precision and predictability.”

Another patient had a congenital deformity, where their ball and socket did not form properly.

“It would have been a very, very tough procedure without the robot because the anatomy was so abnormal,” Eggert said, noting the robot enabled him to perform the joint replacement with no problem.

One patient came to Eggert after a previous ACL reconstruction and half knee replacement, but his prosthetic fractured.

The Mako robot enabled Eggert to solve the problem and now, three years later, the patient feels no pain in the knee.

“He’s a landscaper, and I just saw him a few weeks ago; and he said, ‘I have absolutely no pain,’” Eggert said. “The Mako robot is a great solution for someone who has a horrible problem.”

Those were just a few of many different examples OSI has of various uses of robotic-assisted joint replacement.

Prior to using the Mako robot, Eggert could speak to patients with about 86% certainty that their procedure would be successful.

Now, it’s closer to 100% certainty.

“Robotic surgery has changed my orthopedic life,” Eggert said. “It’s just an incredible thing.”

Dr. David Eggert is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and performs joint replacement surgery at Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley (OSI).

OSI has a team of highly-trained physicians ready to diagnose and treat an array of orthopedic issues, with locations in Ripon, Appleton, New London, Oshkosh, Shawano and Waupaca.

Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley is part of the Ripon Area Preferred Business program.
