Charlottesville, Virginia (CBS19 News) — Since November 1, the Charlottesville Police Department has seen an increase in car break-ins and theft of vehicle parts.

Since November 1, the police have discovered nearly 30 car break-ins and 16 car parts theft.

Captain William Newbury said criminals were stealing the contents of an unlocked car, as well as license plates and catalytic converters.

He said that as the holidays approach, it is common for thefts to increase, and people should be more proactive when locking their belongings.

"Lock your car and don't leave your valuables in the car. If you have to leave something in the car, make sure it is safe and not within sight of the sidewalk or street," Newbury said . Newberry said that they will not attribute the growth to any specific area, but accidents often occur in large parking lots and apartment buildings at night.

He said that no one has been arrested so far.

Newberry said anyone with information should contact the Charlottesville Police Department.
