Julian Edelman has the utmost confidence in Bill Belichick. But even he’s concerned about how the Patriots’ new coaching staff will impact Mac Jones.

Making his return Friday to “The Greg Hill Show,” Edelman said it would be difficult for Jones to change coordinators entering his second season under any circumstances.

“I do share that concern. It’s not a concern, but you’re always concerned when you lose your offensive coordinator and there’s a new guy coming in — regardless of who it is — a young quarterback you have in Mac Jones, who had a successful rookie year, that second year is usually his biggest jump,” said Edelman. “And when he’s gotta change play-callers in the middle of it, it wouldn’t matter if it was someone else who called offensive plays. It’s still going to be a learning experience for that relationship between the quarterback and the play-caller.”

Ultimately, Edelman says he thinks Belichick will share play-calling duties with Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

“We all forget that Matty P started on offense,” said Edelman. “Bill has a thing where if coaches are coming in, he’ll cross-train them. He’ll throw a defensive coach on the offensive side and make them learn the offensive side of the ball for three-four years, then he brings them back to defense. It’s not like Matty P has no information or no knowledge of offense.”

While that’s true — even Josh McDaniels did a stint as a defensive assistant from 2002-03 — it’s pretty unprecedented for a defensive coordinator to become an offensive play-caller. Edelman acknowledged as much.

“This is the NFL — Not For Long. That’s for everyone. That’s for coaches, that’s for players, that’s for GMs. It’s a production business. We all know that. This is gonna be a learning experience. But if they go out there and start off very slow, you don’t want to lose that locker room,” he said. “I’ve never been in that situation. This is a new situation for me to even put myself in, because I’ve never heard of that. This is a little alarming when you see here that a defensive coach is gonna be calling offensive plays, or special teams coordinator/head coach is calling plays. That’s a little alarming.”

With that said, Edelman would still bet on Belichick.

“But if anybody can get this, and do this, it’s Bill Belichick,” said Edelman. “I think this has kind of fired him up, probably. This is a new challenge for Coach Belichick. He’s a competitor. He’s probably sitting [there] like, ‘F everyone for talking about this. Screw these people. They don’t know what they are.’”
